Why Same Sex Couples Still Lose at the End

If you think that Utah would be the last state (if ever) in the nation to allow same sex marriage, you might be in for a surprise.

In case if you are just returning home from a long vacation on the moon, you might have missed the news that in mid-December, over 1000 same sex couples were allowed to get married, right here in Utah. U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby found that the Utah’s voter-approved constitutional amendment 3 (which defines marriage as the union of one man and one woman) was unconstitutional.

The gay community celebrated as they sprinted to the Salt Lake County clerk’s office to obtain their marriage licenses right after Salt Lake County District Attorney Sim Gill saw no reason that prevented their marriage licenses from being issued. But that celebration was short lived when about two weeks later the US Supreme Court put a stop on same sex marriages in Utah.

In regards to the validity of the same sex marriages that were performed, Eric Holder, US Attorney General, in a statement, declared that the federal government will recognize them, however Utah’s Governor Gary Herbert on the other hand, stated that the state won’t recognize the same sex marriages performed since Judge Shelby’s decision.

My stance in relation to same sex marriage is that I believe that marriage should take place between a man and a woman. While I believe that to be true, I also, wholeheartedly, support the right of free association that we all should have. So if you want to live your life differently than I live mine, I am all for that.

Do you believe that the government should, once and for all, allow same gender couples to get married? I think you have a problem if you answered ‘yes’.

What a rollercoaster ride of emotions it must be, being gay, as far as same sex marriage is concerned. One minute the government allows you to get married, the next you can’t, now you can, now you can’t… Gee-whiz.

This unpredictability only exists because the government, in its ever growing size, makes you believe it has all the power to tell people what they can or cannot do. They know better than you do, don’t they? The gay community, in my opinion, fail to recognize that government (not churches or religious beliefs) are the roadblocks in the way of same sex marriage.

By answering ‘yes’ to my earlier question, you are inviting a third-party decision-maker into your relationship – the government. It is like you’d be proposing to two people. “Will you marry me?” and “Will you allow me to get married?” The two of you will no longer be in control of this important decision in your lives. If anyone group should be in favor of living their lives undisturbed and without interference from others, it would be the gay community. If anyone group should be in favor of removing the government from the business of telling who can or cannot get married, it should be the gay community.

The scary part for you is that your happiness may potentially be only temporary because you’re only as happy as the government allows you to be. Real celebration for the gay community will only take place once you accept and support the idea that the government should be out of the marriage business.
